LIU Shuts Out VMI For First Win

--The Long Island University men’s soccer team (1-1) earned its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of Virginia Military Institute at the Radford Tournament. The Blackbirds used three second-half goals vault them past the Keydets (0-2). Jukka Lehto netted the game-winner for LIU.

After 53 minutes of scoreless soccer, Lehto put the Blackbirds on the board by beating VMI goalkeeper John Sollock off a cross from teammate Ryan Williams. In the 66th minute, Michael Marten gave Long Island a two-goal cushion. Ryan Vanderkin assisted on the goal.

Szymon Hryszczyk’s unassisted goal in the 77th minute put the game out of reach for VMI.

LIU goalkeeper Jeremy Wimer earned the shutout by making three saves. Sollock stopped four shots in the loss. The Blackbirds held the edge in shots, 15-7.

Long Island will return to action on Friday, Sept. 1, at the adidas/Hypertherm Dartmouth Soccer Classic. LIU will take on New Hampshire at 1:30 p.m.
