Two Men's Soccer Student-Athletes Earn Academic Honors

11/04/04 -- Long Island University seniors David Ledet and Jonas Stigh were named today to the 2004 Academic All-District I Men's Soccer Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Ledet and Stigh were selected to the District I first and second teams, respectively.

Ledet is a key element in the backfield that helped to limit LIU’s Northeast Conference opponents to just five goals. The Houma, La. native has been an integral part of a defensive unit that has registered six shutouts this season, 16 the past two seasons.

The first-team selection has started 68-of-70 career games, including all 16 this season. Ledet raised his career assist total to 14 this fall, notching three handouts.

The English/Political Science major boasts a 3.88 grade point average. Ledet was one of only 15 students among several New York City colleges to receive a Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship in the summer of 2003. The honor was bestowed on individuals who possess the necessary traits, through leadership, and creativity, to build a commitment to developing a better society.

As one of 11 first-team picks from District 1, Ledet joins an elite field of scholar-athletes that qualified for the national Academic All-America Team, which will be announced November 23.

Stigh, a three-year starter, anchors one of the country’s most tenacious defenses. The unit has yielded just 31 goals over 35 games the past two seasons.

A first-team NEC selection a year ago, Stigh carries a 3.9 GPA in Journalism.

To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his team with a 3.2 cumulative point average. The District 1 men’s soccer squad covers schools with the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont represented.
