10/10/04 -- Freshman forward Pino Tubito gave the Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s soccer team a thrilling 1-0 overtime win over visiting Long Island University, connecting on a header in overtime Sunday afternoon in Teaneck, N.J.

After 90 minutes of scoreless action, Long Island got off two shots in the extra period, but both were off the mark. Time was winding down and the contest looked bound for a second overtime when the Blackbirds were called for a foul about 25 yards out on the left side.

Senior midfielder Antonio Nunziata bent a free kick into the box where Tubito slashed through and headed a shot past diving Blackbirds keeper Ryszard Gorski (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) for the game-winner with only 26 seconds remaining.

It was an evenly played contest throughout regulation, with both teams creating opportunities.

LIU had its best opportunity with only 3:05 left in the second frame when senior back Jonas Stigh (Trollhattan, Sweden) sent a header toward net, but goalkeeper Elvir Prasovic punched it over the crossbar.

Both keepers played well to send the game into overtime. Prasovic and Gorski each recorded eight saves. The Blackbirds recorded a 15-12 edge in shots.

It was the fifth straight time the two teams have gone into overtime, dating to the 2001 NEC title game.

Long Island is now 3-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in league play. It is off until Tuesday, Oct. 19 when they travel across the Hudson to face NJIT at 6:30 p.m.
