10/1/04 -- Junior Mustapha Ayoub (Toronto, Ontario) scored with 87 seconds remaining for Long Island, which opened Northeast Conference play with a 1-0 triumph over Monmouth at LIU Field.

Ayoub received a throw in from senior Josh Couvillion (New Orleans, La.) 10 yards from the goal and patiently waited. After drawing the defense, he quickly spun and fired a shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season and third career for LIU (2-3-2, 1-0 NEC).

The goal undid an outstanding performance by Monmouth goalkeeper Arthur Satterwhite, who played spectacularly by making 12 saves. His two most remarkable came in the 78th minute, when he stopped senior David Ledet (Houma, La.) on a point-blank shot and the rebound came back to sophomore Omer Rozen (Hashofet, Israel), who had his attempt knocked away.

Monmouth, which was outshot 23-7, had a golden opportunity to grab the lead in the 14th minute when Dan Pires was all alone in front, but his shot just sailed right of the post.

Ryszard Gorski (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) made five saves and Rozen fired a team-best six shots. LIU posted a 14-4 shots edge in the second half and moved to 2-0-1 over its last three contests in its first game following a 1-1 draw Sunday with third-ranked Michigan.

Jonathan Schmid and John Carrozza each attempted two shots for the Hawks (5-4, 0-1).

LIU closes its three-game homestand Sunday against Mount St. Mary’s, beginning at 12:00 pm.
