-- Junior Mustapha Ayoub (Toronto,
Ontario), sophomore
Szymon Hryszczyk (Warsaw, Poland) and graduate student Ricardo
Ordain (Brooklyn, N.Y.) all scored for Long Island in a 3-0
Northeast Conference victory over Mount St. Mary’s
at LIU Field.
Ayoub gave the Blackbirds (3-3-2, 2-0 NEC) the
only goal they would need in the 32nd minute. Senior David
Ledet (Houma, La.) launched a free kick from the right side for Ayoub, who headed
it past goalkeeper Gladimir Elysee for his second
goal of the year.
What followed was a brilliant display in net
by LIU keeper Ryszard Gorski (Aberdeenshire,
Scotland), who
turned away the last three
shots in a four-shot flurry by Kurt Borel spanning three minutes.
Gorski lunged to knock the first two shots over the net and
was on the ground while making the third
save between his legs.
LIU gave Gorski some insurance as Hryszczyk scored in the 41st
minute for a 2-0 lead. Ordain blasted a shot that was knocked
away by Elysee, but the rebound came to Hryszczyk and he scored
his second goal of the season from 10 yards.
Ordain closed the scoring in the 87th minute. Freshman Ryan
Vanderkin (Plymouth, Wisc.) fed a pass from the left side to
sophomore Omer Rozen (Hashofet, Israel), who avoided Elysee and
found Ordain by himself at the goal line for a tap-in.
Gorski made nine saves for the Blackbirds, who move to 3-0-1
over their last four outings with three shutouts. Vanderkin,
Ordain and Jonas Stigh (Trollhattan, Sweden) each took three
shots to help LIU gain a 16-11 advantage.
Borel fired six shots and Elysee had two saves for the Mountaineers
(1-6-2, 1-1).
LIU visits Sacred Heart on Friday, beginning at 3:30 pm. |
