More Men's Soccer Players Succeed on the Pitch in the Pros

7/18/05 -- Former Long Island University goalkeeper Ryszard Gorski (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and midfielder David Schofield (Preston, England) each have enjoyed success on the soccer field following graduation.

Both players are headed to Izmir, Turkey to represent Great Britain at the Summer Universiade. This is an international sporting and cultural festival staged every two years by the International Federation of University Sports and is comparable to the Olympic Games.

Gorski also has displayed his talents with the Cocoa Expos of the United Soccer Leagues - Premier Development League. He is third in the league with 10 victories and has helped the squad clinch the Southeast Division with an 11-2-1 record.

Gorski competed for the Blackbirds from 2002-04, helping them last year to their first Northeast Conference title since 1997 and first NCAA College Cup berth since 1986. He posted seven shutouts last year, closing his career with 22, and as a junior in 2003 was 13th in the nation with a 0.64 goals-against average.

Schofield is in his second season with the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL and this year is tied for second on the squad with six points. He had led the team to an 8-3-4 record, good for fourth place in the USL Second Division.

Schofield excelled at midfield three seasons for LIU, earning first team All-NEC honors in 2002 and 2003 as well as second team in 2001. The 2003 NSCAA All-Region honoree finished his career with 19 assists before being drafted by the Btitleimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League.
