Men's Soccer suffers 1-0, double OT loss at St. Francis (PA)

10/29/04 -- Senior Bernie Showers blasted his eighth goal of the season in the second overtime, lifting Saint Francis (PA) to a 1-0 victory over Long Island University in Northeast Conference men's soccer action at Loretto, Pa. on Friday. The Blackbirds fall to 6-5-3, 4-2-1 in the Northeast Conference and the Red Flash improve to 8-5-2, 4-1-1 in league play.

Cesar Pena sent a through-pass to freshman Bryce Luetzen who found a streaking Showers eight yards from the center of the goal. Showers slammed the shot into the back of the net past a diving Ryszard Gorski (Aberdeenshire, Scotland).

Both teams had several scoring opportunities in regulation. LIU midfielders Norman LeVesque (Yucaipa, Calif.) and Casey Madigan (Washington Township, N.J.) both hit the crossbar in the fourth minute of the game and Showers nailed the left post on a free-kick shot with 30 minutes remaining in the match.

Saint Francis nearly ended the game in the 60th minute on a shot from Scott Thompson. The ball appeared headed into the open left corner of the net but was cleared off the goal line by sophomore Shaun Parnell (Houston, Texas).

Gorski registered five stops for and his counterpart Bobby Pipech collected three saves.

LIU continues its Pennsylvania road swing, visiting Robert Morris on Sunday, October 31. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 pm.
