Long Island played to a 0-0 tie with Pittsburgh and Hofstra
posted a 1-0 overtime
victory over Temple in day one of the FieldTurf/Courtyard by
Marriott, LaGuardia Soccer Classic at LIU Field.
The LIU-Pittsburgh encounter was a physical one
as the teams combined for 56 fouls and seven cards. The Blackbirds
(0-2-1) owned a 20-9 shot advantage, including 17-5 after regulation.
Senior goalkeeper Ryszard
Gorski (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) came up with three big saves for LIU. He stoned Thomas
Decato up close in the 77th minute and made saves in the second
overtime off Billy Brush and Brian Madden.
Justin Lowery also played solidly in net, posting
eight saves for the Panthers.
Senior Norman LeVesque
(Yucaipa, Calif.) took
four shots for LIU with sophomore Omer
Rozen (Hashofet, Israel) and senior Jonas
Stigh (Trollhattan, Sweden) adding three apiece.
Brush led Pittsburgh with three shots.
Brandon Quaranta scored the game-winner in the
92nd minute to lift Hofstra in the first game of the tournament.
A throw-in led to the score as Temple goalie Patrick Hannigan
came out of the pentitley box to punch a loose ball only to deliver
directly to Quaranta and the senior drilled a hard shot into
the right corner.
The Pride outshot the Owls 21-7, including 9-1
in the second half. Hannigan registered seven saves and Hofstra
netminder Matthias Gumbrecht recorded two.
Hofstra improves to 3-1 on the season and Temple
falls to 0-3. Day two of the FieldTurf/Courtyard by Marriott,
LaGuardia Classic continues Sunday, September 12 with the Pride
facing Pittsburgh at 12:00. Host LIU will tangle with Temple
at 2:30 p.m.
