3/17/06 -- Senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) collected three RBI, going 2-of-3 from the plate to lead Long Island past Iowa, 7-1 in the Capital Classic Softball Tournament hosted by Sacramento State on Friday afternoon.

The game was delayed due to rains that soaked the fields Thursday evening and Friday morning. LIU's scheduled first contest of the day versus Nevada was cancelled due to the weather.

Classmate Alissa Villanueva (Pacoima, Calif.) added two RBI in the triumph, the Blackbirds' third straight. All three of the wins have occured in the state of California, home of 10 of the LIU's 13 players.

Holly Erwin (Riverside, Calif.) led off the second frame with a walk and following an out, advanced to second on a single by sophomore Brittany Murphy (Los Alamitos, Calif.). Two batters later, Villanueva drilled a two-out single into center field to plate Erwin and Murphy and give LIU an early 2-0 advantage.

The score remained the same until the fifth inning. With two outs, sophomore
Alyssa Winslow (San Jacinto, Calif.) singled to center. Gillespie followed with her second home run of the season.

Vanessa Mejia, Winslow and Gillespie each added an RBI in the sixth to put the contest out of reach.

LIU faces Jacksonville on Saturday, March 18 at 12:30 p.m PST. They meet Illinois at 5:30 p.m. PST.
