2/24/06 -- Sophomore Alyssa Winslow (San Jacinto, Calif.) connected on her first home run of the season but it was not enough as the Long Island University women's softball team lost to Pacific, 11-2, in six innings.

After falling behind by 11 runs in the first 5 1/2 innings, the Blackbirds made a valiant comeback effort in the sixth. After a hit-by-pitch to Vanessa Mejia gave LIU a runner on first, Winslow homered to left to give the team its first two runs of the contest.

Two consecutive singles by Holly Erwin and Randi Gillespie followed by a walk to pinch-hitter Brittany Murphy loaded the bases, but Krystal Mejia grounded out to third to end the rally and the game.

The Blackbirds (2-6) were plagued by miscues all morning, committing four errors that led to four unearned runs for the Tigers.

Brittany Hyams and Jen Stebbins each had two hits for Pacific. Hyams also added three RBI.

Freshman Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) again went the distance in the circle for LIU, allowing 12 hits over six innings of work.

The Blackbirds will face Cal Poly at 6:00 p.m. EST in more Palm Springs Invitational action.
