4/7/06 -- Long Island University fell to Radford, 7-1, at LIU Field on Friday night in collegiate softball action.

Sophomore Celina Castillo (Redwood City, Calif.) tallied a pair of hits and scored a run for the Blackbirds (16-16). Fellow classmate Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) had a double and drove in LIU’s lone run.

A double off the left-centerfield wall by first baseman Holly Erwin (Riverside, Calif.) gave the Blackbirds two runners in scoring position with only one out in the second. Radford starting pitcher Ashley Taylor was up to the task, however, inducing a groundout and notching a strikeout to end the threat.

Radford (26-15) got on the board in the third inning with a single run, but the damage could have been a lot worse for the Blackbirds. Three straight singles loaded the bases with no one out, and following a strikeout of Jennifer Everhart, left fielder Ashley Carlson roped a single to center field. After trying to get the force out at second, LIU shortstop Castillo gunned down Anne Tatum attempting to score. The next batter, Cassie Rhodes, also singled but senior right fielder Leah Glenn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) threw a strike to home plate to record the outfield assist and the final out of the inning.

A double to right field by V. Mejia scored Castillo to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. The Blackbirds would put runners on first and second with only one out but were unable to score.

The Highlanders pounded out 14 hits on the evening, including three in the fourth that led to the go-ahead run. Danielle Tompkins had the RBI single that gave Radford the lead for good. The team would score five more times over the next three innings, including four unearned runs.

Alex Roderick finished 3-for-4 for Radford with a run and run batted in.

Freshman Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) suffered the loss for LIU, allowing two earned runs over five innings while striking out three. Breanna Felix picked up the victory in relief, scattering four hits over 4 2/3 scoreless frames.

The Blackbirds will continue Northeast Conference play on Saturday, Apr. 8 with a home doubleheader against Wagner, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
