2/24/06 -- The
Long Island University softball team dropped their opening
game of the Palm Springs Invitational to No. 4 Texas, 8-0,
in five innings. The Blackbirds fell to 2-4 on the season.
Junior Holly Erwin (Riverside,
Calif.) had the lone hit for LIU in the fourth inning.
Freshman Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) suffered the loss, giving
up
11 hits
and
eight runs over
five innings.
After stranding two runners in
the first inning, the nationally-ranked Longhorns put
five runs up on the board in the second, all with two outs.
Desiree Williams hit her fourth home run of the season over
the left-field fence to help give Texas a 5-0 lead.
The Blackbirds had a prime opportunity
to score in the bottom half of the third inning, as Texas starting
pitcher Meagan Denny walked the bases loaded with one out.
After a brief meeting, Denny struck out Randi Gillespie and
Alyssa Winslow to end the inning.
A two-run homer by Amber Hall
pushed Texas' lead to 7-0 in the fourth. Hall finished with
two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
Erwin's single to lead off the
bottom of the fourth started another potential rally, as a
fielder's choice and a walk gave LIU runners on first and second
with one out. Denny, however, was up to the challenge again,
striking out Krystal Mejia and Brittany Edwards to end the
scoring threat.
The Blackbirds continue play
in the Palm Springs Classic tonight against Oregon State.
