2/17/07 -- The Long Island University softball team dropped two games on day two of the Dunkin' Donuts Classic, hosted by Florida Atlantic, in Boca Raton, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.

The Blackbirds (1-3) lost to Maryland, 4-1, in their first game of the day before being shutout, 4-0, by East Carolina in the second.

In the first game, the Terps got on the board early on a two-run home run by All-America candidate Amber Jackson. Another home run in the second, this time a solo shot by Jennifer Welborn, gave Maryland a 3-0 lead.

Long Island would cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the third, as a two-out double by senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) scored Brynn Lewis (Woodinville, Wash.), who had lead off the inning with a two-bagger.

Jackson would do damage again in the fifth inning, as a steal of home would account for the Terrapins final run of the game. Stacey Jennings picked up the victory in the circle for Maryland, striking out four while walking none over seven strong innings. LIU hurler Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) went six innings and struck out one to even her record at 1-1.

In the second game, Keli Harrell of East Carolina pitched a masterful game, allowing only two Blackbird hits while striking out 11 in the complete-game shutout.

LIU's had runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth innings but was unable to capitalize. Junior Celina Castillo (Bay Area, Calif.) had a triple in the contest while Gillespie had the only other Long Island hit.

Freshman pitcher Blaire Porter (Redmond, Wash.) pitched well, giving up only one earned run in five innings, but took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year.
