Randi Gillespie Named Northeast Conference Softball Player of the Week; Brynn Lewis Earns Rookie of the Week Honors

3/5/07 -- Senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season and the fourth time in her career, as announced by the league office on Monday. Freshman Brynn Lewis (Woodinville, Wash.) was also named the season's first Rookie of the Week.

The reigning NEC Player of the Year, Gillespie opened the season on an eight-game hitting streak and finished the first month of the Blackbirds’ schedule with a .483 batting average. The first baseman/outfielder has tallied four doubles, has a team-high five runs scored and has a .583 on-base percentage.

She opened the season against St. John’s with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and two runs scored and has had two three-hit games already this year (against Florida Atlantic and Oklahoma State).

Lewis has started every game at second base this season and ranks third on the team in RBIs and is tied for second in doubles. At the FAU Dunkin' Donuts Classic gainst Maryland, she went 2-for-3 with a two-base hit and a run scored.

In the Blackbirds' 5-4, extra-inning victory over Cal State Fullerton at the Palm Springs Invitational, the freshman came up huge at the plate. With LIU down 4-2 in the top of the seventh with two outs, runners on second and third and a 1-2 count, Lewis ripped a double to right field that scored two runs and sent the game into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, her sacrifice fly to left field scored classmate Mariesha Marker (Keizer, Ore.) for what proved to be the game-winner.

Long Island is 3-7 on the year and continues its 2007 season at the USF adidas Tampa Tournament in Tampa, Fla. on Mar. 8-11. The Blackbirds play Michigan State on Wednesday, Mar. 8 at 11:00 a.m.
