Senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) was named the Northeast
Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season
and the fourth time in her career, as announced by the league
office
on
Monday.
Freshman
Brynn
Lewis (Woodinville, Wash.) was also named the
season's first Rookie of the Week.
The reigning
NEC Player of the Year, Gillespie opened the season on an eight-game
hitting streak and finished
the first
month
of the Blackbirds’ schedule with a .483 batting average.
The first baseman/outfielder has tallied four doubles,
has a team-high five runs scored and has a .583 on-base percentage.
She opened
the season against St. John’s with a 2-for-3 performance
with a double and two runs scored and has had two three-hit
games already this year (against Florida Atlantic and Oklahoma
State).
Lewis
has started every game at second base this season and ranks
third on the team in RBIs and is tied for second in doubles.
At the FAU Dunkin' Donuts Classic gainst Maryland, she went 2-for-3
with a two-base hit and a run scored.
In the Blackbirds' 5-4, extra-inning
victory
over
Cal
State Fullerton at the Palm Springs Invitational,
the freshman came up huge at the plate. With LIU down 4-2 in
the top of the seventh with two outs, runners on second and
third and a 1-2 count, Lewis ripped a double to right field
that scored
two runs and sent the game into extra innings. In the top of
the ninth, her sacrifice fly to left field scored classmate
Mariesha Marker (Keizer, Ore.) for what proved to be the game-winner.
Long Island is 3-7 on the year
and continues its 2007 season at the USF adidas Tampa Tournament
in Tampa,
Fla.
on Mar. 8-11. The
Blackbirds play Michigan State on Wednesday, Mar. 8 at 11:00
