4/22/07 --
Sophomore Jenny Giles (Melbourne, Fla.) pushed her scoreless-innings streak to
42 innings and recorded her sixth consecutive shutout to help
lead the Long Island University softball team to a 6-0 victory
over
Mount
St. Mary's
in the
first game
of a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Sunday morning at
LIU Field.
In the second contest, junior
Jessie DePippo (Westlake Village, Calif.) belted two home runs
and had four RBIs as the Blackbirds rolled to their school-record
tying 18th straight victory,a 9-1 decision, in five innings.
Giles was dominant throughout
the first game, allowing only two hits and three base runners
the entire game.
She walked none and struck out five while improving to 15-6
on the season and lowering her ERA to 1.68.
Junior
Celina Castillo (Bay Area, Calif.) added a 5-for-5 performance
from the plate over the
two games, including a home run and three runs batted
in. Senior Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.)
contributed three hits to push her season total to 64 and
break LIU's all-time single-season hits record (Rosette Rough
- 63 in 2003).
Long Island opened the scoring
in the first game with a single run in the first. Gillespie
led off with a base hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice
bunt and
scored
on an opposite-field single by Castillo.
Castillo did more damage two
innings later with her two-run shot to right center field that
gave the Blackbirds a 3-0 lead. Gillespie hit a round tripper
of her own the next inning, a solo shot to left. Castillo then
tallied her third RBI of the game with single
in the sixth inning and pinch runner Andrea Diaz (Staten Island,
N.Y.) scored the final run of the contest on a double steal
and throwing error on the catcher.
In the second game, LIU pounded
out 10 hits, eight of which went for extra bases, in the 9-1,
run-rule victory. Castillo added her second homer of the day
in the opening inning while DePippo
hit her blasts in the second and fourth frames. Freshman Raylene
Asman (Escondido, Calif.) added a two-run home run in the third
and also had a double to right center in the fourth.
The offensive outburst was more
than enough for freshman Blaire Porter (Redmond, Wash.), who
set a career high with 11 strikeouts over five innings of work
to pick up her 11th win of the year.
LIU will look for a school-record
19th straight win as it hosts Hofstra in a non-conference contest
beginning at 4:00 p.m.
