5/13/07 -- The Long Island University softball team, the winner of the 2007 Northeast Conference Tournament title, was awarded the league’s automatic berth on Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds (33-20) will compete in the Amherst, Mass. regional, hosted by the University of Massachusetts, and will take on the host Minutewomen (37-12-1) on Friday, May 18 at 4:30 p.m.

The top seed in the region Oklahoma (52-6) will face Patriot League champion Colgate (25-22) in the region's other opening game. The Sooners were ranked second in the nation in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25.

LIU punched its NCAA Tournament ticket for the second straight year and the sixth time in school history by winning its 10th NEC crown on Saturday. The Blackbirds defeated Wagner, 10-0, in six innings for the championship after dropping the first contest of the day to the Seahawks, 8-6.

The Blackbirds have won four of the last five and five of the last seven NEC championships. In addition, LIU has owned at least a share of seven of the last eight conference regular-season crowns.

Last season, Long Island traveled to Hempstead, N.Y. for the NCAA Tournament and dropped two games, one to Arizona State and the other to Penn State. The Sun Devils went on to advance to the 2006 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
