4/25/05 -- Sophomore
Randi Gillespie (San Jose, Calif.) drove in three runs, and
senior Briana
Mathiesen (Sylmar, Calif.) and sophomore Jessie DePippo (Westlake
Village, Calif.) added two runs each to lift Long Island
to an 8-0 victory over Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac
before
a 10-5 loss in the second game at LIU Field on Monday.
The Blackbirds (17-24, 11-3 NEC) scored three runs in each
of the first two innings. Mathiesen led off the first with
a single
down
the left-field line and scored on DePippo's home run.
Gillespie followed with an infield single
and was held
up as the next two batters grounded out. Vanessa Mejia -- who
collected 12 RBI last week in four games -- doubled to
deep right field to plate Gillespie for a 3-0 advantage.
LIU added insurance runs in the next frame on Gillespie’s
sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot. They tacked
on more runs in the fourth. With one out, junior Alissa Villanueva
(Pacoima, Calif.) singled and advanced to second on a fielding
error. Mathiesen followed by taking a 1-1 pitch from
Quinnipiac
reliever Kristin Sheriff out to deep center.
Westminster, Calif senior Jackie Brown faced just three batters
above the minimum, permitting three hits.
Gillespie closed 2-for-2 in the opener while DePippo and Mathiesen
each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Blackbirds in game two played catch-up from the start,
behind the hot-hitting bats, 17 in total, of the Bobcats (14-24,
9-7). Trailing 1-0 and with the bases loaded, LIU took advantage
as Vanessa Mejia singled up the middle to plate Holly Erwin
(Riverside, Calif.) and Gillespie
and
take a
2-1 lead.
After Quinnipiac tied the contest at 2-2 in the second frame,
LIU staged a comeback two innings later. After walking Leah
Glenn, Villanueva -- who made two remarkable defensive plays
in center
field -- connected on a pitch from Kim Norman to push LIU
ahead, 4-2. Two batters later, Mathiesen recorded her ninth
home
run of the season and second of the day, giving the Blackbirds
a 5-2 edge.
With the long blast, the senior standout -- already the program’s
career home run leader with 24 -- topped the previous
single-season high of eight set by Mandy Myers in 1999.
The Bobcats grabbed the lead for good during an eight-hit,
six-run fifth. Sammi Allendorfer opened the inning with a double
into left
center and scored on Norman's single. Brown replaced starter
Chelsea Crosby, but Quinnipiac continued to chop away with
a flurry of hits.
Jenna Henry followed with an RBI single and two batters later,
Brandi Simon added a two-run homer to put the Bobcats ahead to
stay, 6-5. Quinnipiac added two more runs in the sixth off a home
run by Alyssa Mansolf, to close all scoring.
LIU continues NEC play Saturday, traveling to Fairleigh Dickinson.
