(Temple boxscore) / (Cent. Florida box)

3/11/05 -- Briana Mathiesen (Sylmar, Calif.) belted a two-run homer and fellow senior Jackie Brown (Westminster, Calif.) permitted just two runs for Long Island in a 9-2 win over Temple before an 8-0 setback to Central Florida at the Speedline Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.

Leading 4-1 against Temple, LIU tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Celina Castillo (Belmont, Calif.) walked and Mathiesen rapped her team-leading fifth home run of the season for a five-run lead. Sophomore Randi Gillespie (Saratoga, Calif.) singled later in the frame, took second on a single by sophomore Jessie DePippo (Westlake Village, Calif.), reached third on a sacrifice by junior Alissa Villanueva (Pacoima, Calif,) and scored on a single by junior Leah Glenn (Huntington Beach, Calif.).

That was enough support for Brown, who struck out three and yielded just two walks and six hits over seven innings. Gillespie and Glenn each had three hits as part of the Blackbirds' 13-hit attack and Mathiesen ended with three RBI.

Against Central Florida, LIU had its best chance to score in the fifth inning. Villanueva reached on an error and was sacrificed to second by Glenn. Sophomore Holly Erwin (Riverside, Calif.) grounded out to move Villanueva to third and junior Krystal Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) walked. But freshman Brittany Murphy (Los Alamitos, Calif.) grounded out to end the threat.

Senior Chelsea Crosby (Reno, Nev.) permitted eight runs -- seven earned -- and struck out one over five innings. Castillo recorded LIU's lone hit, a leadoff single in the fourth.

The Blackbirds advance to bracket play over the weekend against opponents to be determined.
