9/26/06 – Long
Island University’s men’s and women’s basketball
teams released its schedules for the 2006-07 season on Tuesday.
-
- Under fifth-year head coach
Jim Ferry, the men's basketball team returns its entire starting
lineup and 10 letterwinners this winter. The Blackbirds will
look to build on an 8-4 finish over their final 12 games, including
a 6-1 mark at the new Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.
They open the season on Saturday, November 11 at home against
Binghamton at 7:00 p.m.
-
- In addition to facing the Bearcats
twice, LIU takes on Hartford and New Hampshire from the
America East Conference. The Blackbirds also tangle with teams
from the Big East (St. John's), Big Ten (Penn State and Minnesota),
the Metro Athletic (St. Peter's) and the Ivy League (Columbia).
-
- Long Island will begin conference
play on Thursday, Dec. 7 on the road at reigning Northeast

loss to the Hawks in the quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament.
The home opener in conference will take place on Thursday,
Jan. 4 against Mount St. Mary's.
-
The women’s squad returns two
starters and nine letterwinners from a team that advanced
to the NEC semifinals a year ago. Head coach Stephanie
Gaitley also brings in a stellar six-player recruiting class
that will look to help immediately. The team will open up the
season with a three-game home stand, commencing on Friday,
Nov. 10
against
St. Peter's at 5:30 p.m.
-
- LIU will once again host its
annual
Turkey Classic on November 24 and 25. Cleveland State (Horizon),
South Alabama (Sun Belt) and the College of Charleston (Southern)
will contend for the title.
-
- The Blackbirds league opener
will take place at home on Thursday, Dec. 7 against local rival
St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7:00 p.m. LIU went 5-1 at the Wellness,
