LIU Drops Columbia, 77-57; Blackbirds Snap Five Game Slide

12/10/05--Long Island University had four players reach double figures en route to a 77-57 victory over Columbia University in non-conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Athletic Center.

Senior forward Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) tied her season-high 18 points, posted eight rebounds, and dished out five assists. Junior forward Marquita Thompson (Garland, Texas) added 17, including a 6-for-8 performance from the floor.

LIU (2-6, 0-1 NEC) outscored the Lions in the paint, 32-26, and converted 18 points off Columbia turnovers (16). The Blackbirds shot 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the field overall. Masa Susic (Zenica, Bosnia &Herzegovina) poured in 14 points and tallied eight rebounds while Sonya Coleman (Toledo, Ohio) chipped in 10.

After Columbia (2-7) tied the game at 9-9 with 14:25 remaining in the first period, LIU went on a 14-2 run capped off by a 12- foot jumper by Coleman from the left side, giving the Blackbirds a 23-11 advantage. The Lions were able to close to nine points with a Sarah Beato free-throw with 8:36 showing.

Susic sparked a 10-1 LIU spurt with a trey, pushing the lead to 16 (33-17). The Blackbirds went into the locker room with a 42-23 edge. The last time LIU scored over 40 points at intermission was versus Wagner (December 7, 2004), posting 45.

With less than 15 minutes on the clock, the Blackbirds mounted another run capped off by a 3-pointer from Wirth, extending the lead, 50-27. LIU continued to dominate Columbia, maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout the second frame.

The Lions cut the lead to 14 (62-48) on a old fashioned three-point by from Becky Hogue with 7:08 remaining. Thompson countered, draining 10 points in a three-minute span as the Blackbirds cruised to the 77-57 victory.

Long Island returns to action on Saturday, December 17 hosting the Dayton Flyers. Tip-off is at 2:00 pm.
