Women's Basketball Set For Foreign Tour

5/21/06 -- The Long Island University women’s basketball team sets sail this week for a 10-day, eight-game trip to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia from May 21-31. The Blackbirds will take on two club teams in Venice, Italy, and then travel to Slovenia for a two-game set. Long Island finishes its tour with four games in Croatia on May 26-29.

The Blackbirds are coming off a 14-15 season that ended in the Northeast Conference semifinals. LIU closed in a tie for fourth in the NEC with an 11-7 record, its best finish since the 2002-03 season.

The journey will be a homecoming of sorts for a pair of Blackbirds. Senior Polona Oberc hails from Ljubljana, Slovenia and will face her former club team on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. The 5-8 guard/forward started 28 games last season and led the squad with 2.9 assists per contest.

Junior Sara Oblak, a native of Skofja Loka, Slovenia, will also return to her hometown. The Blackbirds face KK Skofja Loka, the local club team, on Wednesday, May 24 at 5:30 p.m. Oblak finished third on the team in scoring with 7.6 points per game and led the team in field goal percentage (.486).

Long Island arrived in Venice, Italy on Saturday, May 20. The team will suit up two different squads for their trip: Last season’s seniors and assistant coaches will form one team while next season’s returning players will comprise the other.
