Blackbirds Win Fourth Straight; Defeat FDU, 66-60

2/4/06-- Long Island University (8-11, 6-4 NEC) dropped Fairleigh Dickinson, 66-60 on Saturday afternoon at the Rothman Center. Three Blackbirds reached double-figures, helping LIU stretch its win streak to four.

Junior guard Brittani Kozik (Belle Plaine, Iowa) tallied a season-high 15 points, scoring nine in the first period. Forward Polona Oberc (Ljubljana, Slovenia) reached double figures for the fourth time this season, adding 13. Oberc also dished out a team-best seven assists. Marquita Thompson (Garland, Texas) followed with 10 points.

The Knights (5-14, 2-9 NEC) jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the first half, but a three-pointer from Lana Kershaw (Hamilton, New Zealand) pulled LIU to within two (10-12) with 12:36 showing. Thompson tied the game at 27-27 with 1:39 on the clock, after hitting one of two free throws. Masa Susic (Zenica, Bosnia & Herzegovina) nailed a triple to give the Blackbirds their first lead of afternoon, pushing them to a 32-27 advantage at the break.

The Blackbirds shot 84.6 percent (11-for-13) from the charity stripe, while FDU only converted 3-for-9, shooting 33.3percent in the first period.

A pair of treys, courtesy of Thompson and Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.), boosted LIU to a nine-point (40-31) edge. Back-to-back buckets from Katie Warehime pulled the home team to three, 56-53. With the Knights in striking distance, Wirth drilled another three-ball to bump LIU up 61-53 with 2:46 remaining.

Sonya Coleman (Toledo, Ohio) made two shots from the line to give the Blackbirds a ten-point differential and seal the 66-60 victory.

Fairleigh Dickinson was led by Warehime with 16 points.

The Blackbirds take on Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. on Monday, Feb. 6. LIU handed the Pioneers their first loss in Northeast Conference play last Monday, January 30 in the new Wellness, Recreation, and Athletic Center.
