Day 3
Today is May 22, 2006, Day Three
of our European tour and although it was our last day, in Italy,
it surely wasn’t the least.
Most of us set out alarm clocks early in order to do some last
minute shopping for family and friends. Waking up to warm sunshine
and temperatures reaching near 80, it didn’t take long
for the entire team to sprawl out in front of our hotel in
hopes of achieving our first summer tans.
Shortly after, the team enjoyed
yet another water side Italian meal of pasta and pizza for
our pre-game meal before departing
for our first game. The travels in between made the trip somewhat
interesting as well. With everyone on the trip, including myself,
bringing along three plus bags (our GA Amra was carrying TEN
bags), it became evident how difficult it was going to be to
get all of us on one water taxi.
After our first failed attempt,
we needed a plan of action that would keep the Italian “budgers” from cutting
in front. What better way to get on the water taxi than the infamous ‘box
out’ drill we are so familiar with – thanks coach!
After three trips, we made it safely to the right ‘stop’ only
to find out a) how proud we are to be Americans and b) how our
perception of the Italian people wasn’t what it seems.
To put it lightly, some rude Italians made us all ready to move
on to the next part of our tour, but we still had a wonderful
three days in Venice.
After leaving Venice, we headed to another part of Italy where
we took on the Basket Treviso team. Within 45 minutes and a brief
exchanging of gifts and gratitude, the team was acclimating to
the differences between European/American basketball. An 8 second
back court, 24 second shot clock, longer range three point line,
to name a few and despite the differences we came out on top
with our first victory of our European tour.
It was then time to head out for Slovenia Ljubljana, hometown
of Polona Oberc, after a very fun and exhausting day!
