Day 5

Day five of our European Tour featured our second game. The day also had special meaning for me; it was the day I have been waiting for since the very moment the trip was announced last year. Not only was I thrilled about being in my home country- Slovenia- but also that the entire team was going to have lunch at my summer home and play a game against my former teammates.

It was cold and raining when we arrived to my parents home. My dog, Zoya greeted the team and entertained everyone. She even headed to the bus with the team when we were leaving – she enjoyed our company so much she wanted to come with us! Chef, a family friend, warmed us with homemade beef soup with noodles. The girls told me they loved the bread with cheese from my father’s bakery. The second course of our meal offered us a choice -- beef, turkey and chicken, cottage cheese roles, fried vegetables, and baked potatoes. The peak of the meal was a tiramisu cake (that had our team picture printed on the top) and grandma’s apple strudel. Yum!!

After lunch, we arrived at the gym where I spent 11 years playing prior to coming to LIU. After a clinic for some Slovenian coaches, the game began! With the support of my family members: aunts and uncles, cousins, my parents, and many friends from the bleachers, I was so excited to represent LIU in the “battle” against my former teammates- very good friends of mine.

When the game was over -we won by 25- and after giving few statements to a hometown journalist, it was finally time for me to greet all the people that came to support us and to talk to all my former teammates, exchanging impressions.

Later that night, the team went out to one of most famous clubs in Ljubljana where we were the real attraction for the Slovenian “public”. When the day was over, I felt extremely happy and thankful to all the LIU staff that made this part of the trip a reality. And I am especially thankful for everything my parents had done for us today.

Day 6
TRAVEL DAY! Packing our bags very early, we headed on a semi-tiring journey to Split, Croatia. Despite the early start and seven hours on the road, it was so worth seeing the gorgeous city of Split. With large mountains lingering in the background, Split sits below on the edge of the Adriatic Sea. The site of the sea beneath the mountains- especially at dusk- was an amazing treat after a long day on the road. We all look forward to spending time on the beach tomorrow!!!!
