Island University women's basketball team dropped an 84-75
decision to Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday
evening
at the
Schwartz Athletic Center.
Senior forward Polona Oberc (Ljubjana,
Slovenia) netted a game-high 23 points, including a 10-for-14
performance from the field. Sophomore guard Mikaelar Whippy
(Suva, Fiji) tallied 14 points, five rebounds and dished out a
season-high four assists. Guard
Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) reached double figures for the fourth
consecutive game, adding 11.
The Blackbirds (1-4) out-rebounded
Loyola, 35-32, and converted 16 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance
points.
LIU took a 6-5 lead on a trey from Masa Susic (Zenica, Bosnia & Herzegovina)
at the 16:58 mark, but the Greyhounds countered by going on a 14-6
run sparked by a layup from junior Vanessa Ruffin. With 5:08 showing
in the opening stanza, Susic drained another three-pointer to cut
Loyola’s lead to four, 25-21. Junior Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka,
Slovenia) ended a Greyhounds 8-1 spurt with a jumper at the 1:08
mark. Loyola’s Jackie Valderas finished the first half
with a layup from senior Krystle Harrington to push the Greyhounds
to
a 41-30 advantage at the break.
The Greyhounds (1-2) lead dwindled to one (47-46) as Oberc made
good on a three-point play with 15:10 showing. Junior Marquita
Thompson’s
(Garland, Texas) two free throws tied the contest at 49-49 less
than two minutes later. Loyola bumped its lead back up to nine
(61-52) behind a free throw from Jill Glessner with 7:07 remaining.
The Blackbirds would get as close as five, 65-60, as junior Sonya
Coleman (Toledo, Ohio) sank two from the line.
A 9-2 run in the closing minutes, capped off by a layup from
Brittany Dunn with 13 seconds left, pushed the lead to double-digits
and
sealed Loyola’s first win of the season. Glessner paced
the Greyhounds with 16 points and a team-high nine boards. Harrington
added 15 points and seven assists.
LIU travels to Boston University on Saturday, December 3 for a
non-conference matchup beginning at 1:00 p.m.
