-- Long Island University junior Marquita Thompson (Garland,
Texas) scored in double-digits for the third game in a row but
her effort could not hold off Mount St. Mary’s as the Blackbirds
fell, 69-58, on Monday evening at Schwartz Athletic Center.
Junior Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) and Amber Wirth
(Hastings, Minn.) notched 13 points apiece for the Blackbirds
(3-9, 1-2 NEC).
The Mountaineers opened the contest with an 18-5 run and pushed
to a 20-point advantage as they took a 39-19 lead in to the looker
room. Dominique Mazzuchi tallied all of her 16 points, a career-high,
in the first stanza.
In the second frame, the Blackbirds cut the lead to eight
with a layup by junior Anna Dziadkowiec (Krakow, Poland),
capping
off a 16-0 run. Long Island’s stifling defense held the Mountaineers
without a basket for seven minutes. Butler ended the Mount drought
with a bucket with 7:57 remaining.
An Oblak jumper pulled LIU to with in seven (52-59) but they
could get no closer. Mount St. Mary’s ended the game by going on
a 10-6 spurt, capturing the win, 69-58.
Tiffany Green finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds for
Mount St. Mary’s (6-6, 3-0 NEC) LaToya Butler also posted double-figure
scoring with 12 points and a game-high eight boards.
