Blackbirds Drop 72-68 Decision at Navy

The Long Island University women's basketball team fell to Navy,72-68, Tuesday evening at Dave Smiley Court in Alumni Hall. Junior Sara Oblak (Slovenia) led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds, including 16 points in the second half.

Two other Blackbirds also reached double figures. Senior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) notched 14 points, shooting 4-of-6 from three-point range. Junior Marquita Thompson (Garland, Texas) posted 12 points with a 5-of-6 performance from the floor.

LIU (2-8, 0-1 NEC) led by four (12-8) to start the first period. The Midshipmen went on an 18-6 run punctuated by two free throws by Lindi Conner with 1:20 showing. Navy headed into the locker room with a 34-23 edge, despite being outscored 23-10 by Long Island reserves.

The Blackbirds, lead by torrid shooting from Oblak chipped away at Navy's lead, cutting the advantage to nine (56-47) with five minutes remaining. Oblak ignited a 14-4 spurt that included three consecutive triples from Wirth. With 46 seconds remaining, LIU pulled to within three, 69-66 on a free throw by Oblak but could get no closer as Navy sailed away with the victory.

The Mids were led by Ashley Pelzek and Lauren Skrel with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Long Island hosts Northeast Conference rival Central Connecticut on Saturday, Jan.7 at 2:00 pm in the Schwartz Center.
