12/7/05 --The
Long Island University women’s basketball team fell to Quinnipiac
University, 75-68, Wednesday evening at Burt Kahn Court in the
Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
The Blackbirds (1-6, 0-1 NEC)
were led by senior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) with 15 points
and five rebounds. Wirth secured her place in the LIU annals,
scoring over 1,000 career points.
In addition to Wirth, two Blackbirds
scored in double figures. Polona Oberc (Ljubljana, Slovenia)
collected 13 points and five rebounds, followed by junior Sonya
Coleman (Toledo, Ohio) with 11 points.
Classmate Marquita Thompson
(Garland, Texas) posted nine points, shooting 5-of-6 from the
free throw line and hauling in five boards.
The Bobcats jumped out to a seven
point head start, 11-4, five minutes into the first half The
Bobcats pushed their lead to 15 (31-16)
with a jumper from Monique Lee.
LIU cut the advantage to one,
32-31, with 2:00 minutes remaining in the opening stanza behind
a 3-pointer from Masa
Susic (Zenica,
Bosnia & Herzegovina). Junior Brittani Kozik (Belle Plaine,
Iowa) hit a jumper to tie the game, 34-34, at the break.
With the game tied at 40-40,
the Blackbirds went on an 8-2 spurt capped off by a Mikaelar
Whippy (Suva, Fiji) lay-in and took a 48-42 lead. Brianna
Rooney
hit a three-pointer to pull
Quinnipiac within
three, but Coleman responded with a trey of her own to
bump LIU's advantage back up to a six, 51-45, with
13:38 on the clock.
After sitting for most of the
second half with four fouls, Monique Lee made a layup to give
the Bobcats a 65-64 lead
with 1:22 left in the game. Quinnipiac would make eight consecutive
free throws down the stretch to seal the 75-68 victory.
Monique Lee paced the Bobcats with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Long Island hosts Columbia on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2:00 pm in
the Schwartz Center.
