Women's Basketball Handed 68-51 Defeat at Robert Morris

1/14/06- The Long Island University women’s basketball team fell to Robert Morris, 68-51, in Northeast Conference action on Saturday evening at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Off the bench, junior Marquita Thompson led the Blackbirds with 12 points. . Junior Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) added 10, all in the first half, while senior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) and junior Sonya Coleman (Toledo, Ohio) each chipped in with eight points.

The Colonials opened the game on a 5-0 run but LIU (3-10, 1-3 NEC) responded with six straight points as a jumper by Coleman gave the Blackbirds their first and only lead of the game, 6-5, with 14:38 remaining in the opening half.

After Robert Morris (8-5, 4-0 NEC) pushed its lead to nine (19-10), the inside combination of Oblak and Thompson combined for six points in 53 seconds. An Oblak lay-up cut the LIU deficit to five, 25-20, with 4:38 left in the stanza. The Colonials responded with a 6-0 run to finish the half as they took a 31-20 advantage at the break..

Five straight points by Natasha Summerville sparked an 11-2 run to begin the second stanza for Robert Morris as its lead grew to as many as 18 points in the frame.

The Blackbirds fought back as a Masa Susic three-pointer following a timeout pulled LIU to within nine with 8:11 left in the game. It would not be enough as two three-pointers by Le’Sheala Dawson, her only field goals of the night, in a span of 1:16 pushed the Colonials lead back to 15 as they went on to victory.

Summerville had a game-high 29 points for Robert Morris on 11-for-24 shooting. Tess Cooley, who was a teammate of Thompson’s at Coffeyville (Kan.) CC, scored 10 points off the bench.

The Blackbirds continue NEC play on the road at St. Francis (Pa.) on Monday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
