2/18/06 -- Senior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) led the Long Island University women's basketball team (12-12, 10-5 NEC) to its fourth straight victory with 23 points. The Blackbirds dropped St. Francis (Pa) (3-22, 3-12 NEC), 79-62 on Saturday afternoon, extending their home win streak to five and matching a school record for 3-pointers in a game (12) for the fourth time.

Wirth set a new career-best with seven triples in the contest. Junior Marquita Thompson (Garland, Texas), returning from injury, notched 20 points and eight rebounds. Classmates Masa Susic (Zenica, Bosnia & Herzegovina) and Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) notched 13 and 10 points, respectively.

With 15:29 showing in the first period, Wirth nailed a 3-ball, igniting a 9-0 Blackbird run (17-8). SFPA cut the lead to five (17-12), but Wirth answered with another trey. LIU led 47-24 at the break, marking the second consecutive game with 40 or more LIU points at halftime.

At the end of the first frame, Wirth matched her season-high six 3-pointers and points scored (18). Thompson followed with 15 points and a 7-of-8 performance from the floor. The Blackbirds shot 67.9 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from 3-point range while holding SFPA to 9-of-26 field goal shooting (34.6 percent).

An Oblak jumper in the opening minutes of the second stanza pushed LIU to a 49-24 advantage over the Red Flash. At the 11:21 mark, Thompson converted an old-fashioned three-point play after stealing the ball and getting fouled under the basket, giving the Blackbirds a 25 point edge (64-39).

SFPA cut the margin to 14, with two free throws by Shawna Scott, but could get no closer as Susic drilled her third trey of the game to give the Blackbirds a lead they would not give up.

The Red Flash led by Beth Halter with 20 points, fell 79-62.

LIU celebrates Senior Day on Monday, February 20, taking on Robert Morris at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. Tip-Off is at 7:00 pm.
