Women's Basketball Honored For Scholastic Achievement

 


7/31/06 -- Long Island University was recently named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Top 25 Division I Honor Roll. The award recognizes teams with the highest grade point averages for the 2005-06 season based upon nominations by WBCA-member coaches. The Blackbirds tallied a team GPA of 3.301, earning the 21st spot on the distinguished list.


Former LIU standout Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) led the way, maintaining a 3.79 GPA and receiving dean’s list honors every semester. She was named to multiple all-academic teams during her senior season and was inducted to Alpha Lambda Delta and Alpha Chi honor societies. Wirth secured her place in the Blackbird annals by scoring over 1,000 career points and claimed the top spot in 3-pointers made with 291 triples.


The Blackbirds finished the 2005-06 season tied for fourth place in the Northeast Conference (11-7 NEC, 14-15 overall) and rallied to an appearance in the conference semi-finals.
