1/28/06 --Junior Marquita Thompson (Garland, Texas) had a game-high 14 points as the Long Island University women's basketball team evened its Northeast Conference record at 4-4 with its second straight win, a 62-47 victory over Wagner on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Lana Kershaw (Hamilton, New Zealand) added a season-best 13 for the Blackbirds (6-11). It was a total team effort, as 10 different LIU players scored in the contest.

After a jumper by Chelsey Bunyer at the 4:06 mark of the first half cut the LIU lead to one, 16-15, the Blackbirds went on a tear. LIU would score the next 10 points en route to a 26-17 halftime advantage. Kershaw and senior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) each connected on two three-pointers in the period.

The momentum continued to build in favor of the Blackbirds to start the second stanza as a three-point play by Thompson finished off an 11-2 spurt that pushed their lead to 18 (37-19) with 13:07 remaining. Another old-fashioned three-point play by Thompson gave LIU its largest lead of the game, 52-31.

The Blackbirds shot a blistering 52 percent in the second half as their lead never sunk beneath double-digits the rest of the way.

Ali Ridge notched a double-double for the Seahawks (1-16, 1-7 NEC) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four blocks. Bunyer led Wagner with 11 points.

LIU looks to make it three consecutive victories on Monday, Jan. 30, entertaining first-place Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers are unbeaten in conference play at 9-0 and boast a 10-game winning streak.
