Women's Basketball Wins at Loyola, 71-65

12/30/04 -- Long Island University had four players notch double figure scoring en route to a 71-65 triumph at Loyola on Thursday night at Reitz Arena in Baltimore, Md.

Junior Amber Wirth paced the Blackbirds (5-4) with 16 points, including a 4-for-6 showing from 3-point range. Sophomore Sara Oblak and senior Polona Oberc added 14 points each and sophomore Masa Susic registered 10. LIU shot 45.8 percent from the field and a 61.5 percent clip from behind the arc.

Loyola led for the first six minutes of the contest before the visitors went on a 7-0 run to claim a 15-10 lead at the 12:10 mark. The Blackbirds nailed two of their five first-half three pointers in that run. Lauren Troupe answered back with a triple of her own to spark a 6-0 Greyhounds spurt to reclaim the lead at 17-15 with 8:53 to play in the first half. The Blackbirds took the advantage back, closing the half on a 25-13 run to take a 40-30 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Blackbirds stretched their lead to 13 on a Wirth 3-pointer with 10:04 remaining. The Greyhounds ran off a 13-5 run to pull within four, 59-54.

With just under a minute to play and clinging to a 64-61 lead, LIU sealed the contest at the free throw line. The Blackbirds went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe en route to their fifth victory of the season.
