Women's Basketball Falls, 68-50, to Oregon in LIU Turkey Classic Final

11/27/04 -- Cathrine Kraayeveld scored 18 points and was named Most Valuable Player of the LIU Turkey Classic as Oregon posted a 68-50 triumph over Long Island at Schwartz Center.

Miami (FL) earlier today won the consolation game, 88-64 over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Kraayeveld, who shot 8-of-11 from the floor overall, scored six points during a 22-4 spurt that gave Oregon (4-0) a 22-7 lead with 10:02 left in the first half. Chelsea Wagner, also named to the all-tournament team, hit two 3-pointers in that stretch.

Kraayeveld scored 12 points in the opening half to help the Ducks shoot 65 percent (17-of-26) and gain a 38-24 cushion. She finished the tournament with 28 points on 13-of-22 shooting with 16 rebounds, including seven today.

Wagner poured in 11 points with three 3-pointers one day after ending with 21 points in a semifinal triumph over Miami (FL). Corrie Mizusawa scored 11 points and Andrea Bills added eight for Oregon, which shot 56 percent (28-of-50) overall.

Sophomore Kelli Sawyer (Philadelphia, Pa.) made the all-tournament team for the Blackbirds (1-2) with 17 points today and five rebounds. This came after closing with 18 points and 11 rebounds Friday against UMES.

Junior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) scored nine points and senior Polona Oberc (Ljubljana, Slovenia) added eight for LIU, which shot 38 percent (18-of-48) and was just 4-of-16 from 3-point range.

Miami (3-2) outscored UMES, 46-31, in the second half thanks to 16 second-half points from Tamara James on 7-of-11 shooting. The Hurricanes hit 45 percent (14-of-31) from the field in the half and held the Lady Hawks to 41 percent (11-of-27).

James netted 24 points to make the all-tournament team with 46 points and 12 rebounds. Yalonda McCormick scored a career-best 29 points on 12-of-23 shooting, finishing the weekend with 47 points, 16 assists and seven rebounds to also make the all-tournament team.

Jamila Griffith scored 15 points and Toni Kennedy added 14 for the Lady Hawks (0-5).

LIU returns to action Tuesday against Colgate. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm.
