Women's Basketball Loses, 63-53, at St. Francis (PA) in Season Finale

2/28/05 -- Senior Polona Oberc (Ljubljana, Slovenia) scored 22 points for Long Island in a 63-53 Northeast Conference loss at St. Francis (PA) to close the season.

Down 33-20 at halftime, LIU (9-18, 5-13 NEC) opened the second half on a 12-4 run in which Oberc scored nine points. The Blackbirds shot 5-of-7 from the field in that time.

But the Red Flash (18-9, 16-2) responded with an 18-6 spurt over the next 6 1/2 minutes for a 55-38 lead with 8:09 left. Beth Swink scored seven points in that span for St. Francis (PA).

The Blackbirds shot 50 percent (13-of-26) in the second half and 41 percent (21-of-51) overall, but hit just 5-of-19 from 3-point range for their 10th straight setback.

Junior Amber Wirth (Hastings, Minn.) and sophomore Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) scored seven points apiece with junior Goska Radwan (Stalowa Vola, Poland) adding six for LIU. Senior Ravin Chase (Baltimore, Md.) scored four points in her final game, moving into sole possession of 29th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 603.

Swink poured in 27 points on 13-of-19 shooting with Christin Black, Lauren Gompers and Amber Hein adding eight apiece for the Red Flash, who shot 60 percent (15-of-25) in the first half and 51 percent (28-of-55) overall.
