Women's Basketball Loses, 65-28, at Sacred Heart

2/19/05 -- Long Island could not overcome red-shot shooting Sacred Heart for a 65-28 Northeast Conference loss in Fairfield, Conn.

Senior Polona Oberc (Ljubljana, Slovenia) scored eight points and Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) added eight and six rebounds for the Blackbirds (9-15, 5-10 NEC).

LIU found itself in an 18-4 hole over the first 8:20 thanks to six points apiece from Nicolle Rubino and Amanda Pape. Sacred Heart (15-10, 12-4) shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor in the opening half for a 35-12 lead.

The Blackbirds shot just 29 percent (6-of-21) in the first half and 25 percent (13-of-52) overall. LIU was 0-of-13 from 3-point range and committed 28 turnovers for its seventh straight loss.

Rubino closed with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Pape scored 15 points and Colleen Duggan added 10 off the bench for the Pioneers, who shot 45 percent (25-of-56) overall.

The Blackbirds return to the hardwood Monday for a 2:00 pm matinee against St. Francis (NY) in the "Battle of Brooklyn." Seniors Ravin Chase (Baltimore, Md.) and Lana Kershaw (Hamilton, New Zealand) will be honored prior to their final home game at Schwartz Center.
