10/28/05 --Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied her fifth goal of the season and junior Stephanie Kansky (Bellevue, Wash.) was outstanding in net as Long Island University blanked Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0, in Northeast Conference women’s soccer action on Friday night.

With the victory, the Blackbirds (11-5-1) clinch a berth into next week’s NEC tournament in New Britain, Conn. They also tie the program record for victories in a season, set in 1999.

After a first half in which neither team was able to get much going offensively, the Knights had a great opportunity early in the second half to take the lead. After an LIU foul in the 47th minute, Marguerite Ferrell took a direct kick just outside the box and hit the crossbar as the game remained scoreless.

LIU broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute. Freshman Christina O’Connor (Venetia, Pa.), from the left wing, found an open McCormick just outside the 18-foot box. McCormick’s shot grazed a Knight defender and redirected past goalkeeper Kyla Clark into the net. The goal was McCormick’s fourth game-winner of the season, tying her career-best set last year.

The Knights had one final opportunity in the 73rd minute. FDU’s Jennifer Tarvin booted a shot towards the top-left corner of the net, but Kansky was there to punch the ball over the crossbar to preserve the victory. For the match, Kansky made five saves en route to her second shutout of the season.

LIU finishes its regular season on Sunday, Oct. 30 as they host Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.
