forward Selima Berisha (Bellevue, Wash.) scored twice and
assisted on the game-winner to lift Long Island to a 3-2
triumph over Wagner in Northeast Conference women’s
soccer action Friday afternoon.
The Blackbirds (10-5-1,
5-1-1 NEC) netted two goals in the final seven minutes to
secure the victory and extend their unbeaten streak to six
games.
Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool,
N.Y.) headed in the go-ahead score in the 88th minute, her
second game-winner in as many games.
Berisha opened scoring in the
first half, scoring off a pass from sophomore Catie Blake (Southbridge,
Mass.) in the 13th minute.
The Seahawks (2-10-1, 2-4-1 NEC)
tied the game at the 71:24 mark on an indirect kick scored
by Heather Daubert. A five-yard blast into the upper right
corner by Betty Ann Rogers put Wagner ahead, 2-1, less than
10 minutes later.
LIU responded with the tying
score less than two minutes later when Berisha scored from
four-yards out off a pass from junior Allison Andreano (Denville,
N.J.). With the clock winding down, the Blackbirds went to
work to put the game away. McCormick headed in the go-ahead
tally with 87:29 showing to give LIU the win.
The Blackbirds are next in action
on Friday, Oct. 28, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:00 p.m.
