-- Long Island University
freshman Aly Hanson (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) was
named Northeast Conference Women’s
Soccer Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office
on Monday.
The North Jersey product scored the most
memorable goal of the season for the Blackbirds, notching
the game-winner
in a 1-0
victory over Monmouth on Friday. In doing so, Hanson helped propel
LIU to the top spot in the NEC standings over the then-unbeaten
Hawks. Coming off the bench, the speedy forward headed in a free
kick from teammate Nicole Allen just prior to the halftime horn
for the game’s lone goal.
On Sunday in a 3-0 blanking of Mount
St. Mary’s, Hanson
assisted on the game-winner from senior Lizelle Jackson. In addition,
she drew the foul that led to Ashley O’Connor’s penalty
kick score in the 41st minute.
Hanson ranks second in the league with eight goals on the season
and is fourth with 17 points.
The win over the Mount secured the Blackbirds their first-ever
NEC regular season title and the right to host the NEC Tournament
beginning Friday, November 3. LIU faces fourth-seeded Sacred
Heart at 11:00 a.m. at LIU Field.
