3/6/06 --
Freshman Ashley Harvey (Randallstown, Md.) recorded four victories
over the weekend as the Long Island University women's tennis
team split a pair of matches this weekend at St. Peter's College
on Friday evening.
The Blackbirds fell to Fordham,
5-2, in the first match but regrouped to sweep St. Peter's,
7-0.
Harvey was the lone singles winner
for LIU against Fordham, defeating Doina Soudor in No. 4 singles,
6-0, 6-2. Senior Claudia Arteaga and freshman Amy Hosotsuji
both lost heartbreaking, third-set tiebreakers, 10-8.
Arteaga took the first set from
Danielle Spigner, 6-2, before dropping the second, 7-5, to
take the match to a tiebreaker. Hosotsuji evened her match
with Lisa Vullin at one-set apiece with a 6-4 second-set win,
but was unable to breakthrough in the third.
LIU took two out of three doubles
matches to capture the doubles point. Harvey and Arteaga won
at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, while Hosotsuji and teammate Jessica
Loose
(Scheessel, Germany) took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4.
Against St. Peter's, the Blackbirds
did not drop a set en route to a 7-0 sweep. Loose defeated
Angela Wiggs, 6-3, 6-0, in No. 1 singles. Both Harvey and junior
Xenia Roman Korobochkina (Vera Cruz, Mexico) turned in dominant
performances for the Blackbirds as they each won, 6-0, 6-0,
at No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively.
LIU travels to Florida for five
matches, beginning on Monday, Mar. 13 against Eastern Kentucky
at 8:00 a.m.
