2/10/07-- Senior Merve Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) won her first singles match of the spring season but the Long Island University women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to NJIT on Saturday evening.

Koksal rolled to a 6-0 victory in the first set over Marine Henry and followed with a 6-3 win in the second to give LIU its first singles point of the spring season.

Sophomore Liliana Cortes (Cochobamba, Bolivia) was victorious in the first set of her No. 3 singles contest with Isha Toor, 7-6 (7-3), but lost the second set, 3-6, and dropped a 10-4 tiebreaker in the third.

The Highlanders won the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches in straight sets and also won the doubles point, 2-0. LIU forfeited both the No. 6 singles spot and No. 3 doubles position.

Long Island returns to action on Mar. 2 against St. Peter’s at 3:00 p.m.
