4/22/07 -- For the fourth consecutive season, the Long Island University women's tennis team was denied a trip to the NCAA Tournament by Quinnipiac, who dropped the Blackbirds, 4-3, in the finals of the Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament in West Windsor, N.J. on Saturday.

Long Island split the first four matches with the Bobcats before freshman H'Ann Johnson (St. John's, Antigua) came back from one set down and defeated Gabby Pasternak, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, at the top singles spot. The victory gave LIU a 3-2 advantage with two singles matches remaining.

Sophomore Liliana Cortes (Cochabamba, Bolivia) battled through a leg injury to force a third-set tiebreaker with Amanda Petruzzi at No. 4 singles. Cortes was up by a 6-2 margin and had five championship points but Petruzzi reeled off six straight points to take the tiebreaker, 8-6, and the match.

The final match of the afternoon was at the second spot where sophomore Ashley Harvey (Randallstown, Md.) won a second-set tie break but was unable to pull out the win as she fell in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
