The Long Island University tennis team turned in an impressive performance, sweeping
all six singles matches and taking the doubles
point, 3-0, in its first spring victory of the season against
St. Peter's on Friday afternoon.
Senior Merve Koksal (Ankara,
Turkey) led the charge with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kristy
Bonner at No. 3 singles. Freshman H'Ann Johnson (St. John's,
Antigua) won at the top singles spot while sophomore Ashley
Harvey (Randallstown, Md.) defeated Angela Wiggs, 6-4, 4-6,
6-4 at the No. 2 position.
In the first singles victory
of her LIU career, sophomore Liliana Cortes (Cochabamba, Bolivia)
dropped Meredith Earley, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 4 singles. Xenia
Roman (Vera Cruz, Mexico) and Amy Hosotsuji (Toronto, Ontario)
were victorious at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Koksal and Cortes combined for
the victory at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, and Roman and Johnson paired
to defeat Earley and Bonner, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot.
Long Island will travel to Florida
for spring break and will face Radford, Manhattan and Valparaiso
on its trip south.
