10/8- 10/9 -- The Long Island University women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches, falling to Akron and Fordham this weekend in the Bronx by identical 4-3 scores.

On Friday, the Blackbirds jumped to an early lead winning the doubles point behind strong play from the number 1 seed team of Veronica Apostu-Efermov and Krystina Bachner.
The duo rolled to an 8-2 victory over Courtney Brenkus and Mindy Price. The second-seeded tandem of Merve Koksal and Ellen Anolin recorded a 9-8 (2) triumph over Stephanie Miles and Laura Hemlapp to secure the point.

In singles action, Koksal posted a straight sets victory, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Bachner was a 6-1, 6-0 victor at the third position. Their victories were not enough, as the Zips raced to wins at the four other single spots. Freshman Claudia Arteaga took Hemler to three sets at the No. 5 singles before falling 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

On Saturday against the host Rams, the Blackbirds again cruised in the doubles compeition winning two of the three matches to take the point.

Bachner raised her mark to 3-0 on the season with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the third spot. She was joined in the winner's circle by Anolin in the fourth singles slot.

The women are back in action on Oct, 15, traveling to St. Peter's. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
