4/16/05 -- Long Island won four of its singles matches to secure a 4-3 victory over the University of Albany in women’s tennis action at Flushing, N.Y. this afternoon.

The Blackbirds (12-6) enjoyed triumphs from sophomore Merve Koksal (Ankara, Turkey), 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and senior Veronica Apostu-Efremov (Bucharest, Romania), 6-0, 6-3, at second singles.

Senior Ellen Anolin (Flushing, N.Y.) and sophomore Xenia Roman (Vera Cruz, Mexico) also secured victories at fifth and sixth singles, respectively for LIU. Apostu-Efremov and junior Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.) beat Courtney Michels and Amy Kern for the team's lone doubles victory at No. 1.

LIU, which improved to 7-4 in the spring, faces Hartford on Sunday at 11:00 am to close the regular season. The Blackbirds, the number two seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament, will face seventh-seeded Robert Morris in the quarterfinals April 22 at 9:00 am in West Windsor, N.J.
