Island University registered a 4-3 victory over Hofstra on
Friday evening in women’s collegiate tennis
action in the Bronx. With the triumph, the Blackbirds pull
even to 2-2 on the spring season.
LIU captured the doubles point with thrilling victories at the
No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Sophomore Merve Koksal (Ankara, Turkey)
and junior Claudia Arteaga (Cali, Columbia) recorded a decisive
8-3 triumph at the second spot. Senior Jasmine Grays (Springfield
Gardens, N.Y.) and sophomore Xenia Roman (Vera Cruz, Mexico)
outlasted Pride players Jillian Schalk and Valerie McDonald,
9-8 (9-7), securing the first point for LIU.
In singles action, senior Veronica Apostu-Efermov (Bucharest,
Romania) won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Junior Krystina Bachner
(Penfield, N.Y.) continued her stellar play, posting a 6-0, 6-3
win over Mayo Hosada at the third spot.
The match was won at the fourth singles spot by newcomer Arteaga.
She captured the deciding point, defeating Jill Spirtus 7-6 (2),
6-2.
The Blackbirds are off until March 14.
