-- One day after learning it was the No. 2 seed
at next week's Northeast Conference Tournament, Long Island
University cruised to a 7-0 NEC victory over Monmouth at
Stadium Racket Club in the Bronx.
Sophomore Merve Koksal (Ankara,
Turkey) rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles over
Kelly Phoebus
and junior Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.) won by the same
score at No. 3 singles over Kelly Fangmann. Senior Veronica
Apostu-Efremov (Bucharest, Romania) notched a 6-1, 6-2 triumph
at No. 2 singles over Ashleigh Johnson and junior Claudia Arteaga
(Cali, Colombia) won, 6-1, 6-1, at fourth singles over Lauren
Harms.
Sophomore Xenia Roman (Vera Cruz,
Mexico) recorded a 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory at fifth singles
against
Kelly Shedelbower
and
junior Andrea Pertab (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) won, 7-5, 6-3,
at No. 6 singles over Jennifer Taylor.
Apostu-Efremov and Bachner continued
their strong play at first doubles with an 8-2 triumph over
Phoebus and Johnson. Koksal and Arteaga won, 8-1, at second
doubles over Taylor and Shedelbower.
LIU (11-6, 5-0 NEC), last year's
NEC runner-up, opens the NEC Tournament on Friday, April 22
against seventh-seeded Robert Morris. The tournament takes
place at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
