6/20/05 -- Long Island University senior Veronica Apostu-Efremov (Bucharest, Romania), a standout on both the court and in the classroom, was tabbed the Northeast Conference Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete.

Apostu-Efremov formed one half of a powerful tandem at first doubles with junior Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.), earning them a place on the second team All-NEC squad. The duo recorded a league-best 16 victories against only five defeats and went 7-1 in conference matches.

Also a strong player at second singles, she closed the season 14-7 overall and 5-1 against the NEC.

Apostu-Efremov graduated last month with a 3.96 grade-point average in Media Arts. She also was tabbed LIU’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Her efforts this season helped the Blackbirds (15-7, 5-0 NEC) advance to the NEC final a second straight year against Quinnipiac. LIU posted a 10-5 mark in the spring that included a five-match winning streak before the final.
