10/16/04 -- Long Island University posted its second and third wins of the season, respectively, Saturday in the closing day of the Peahen Fall Classic in Jersey City, N.J. The Blackbirds defeated Northeast Conference foes Wagner and St. Francis (NY) by identical 7-0 scores.

LIU swept five singles matches and captured the doubles points against the Seahawks in the first match. Three Blackbirds did not give up a set in the contest, sweeping the second through fifth positions, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Veronica Apostu-Efremov (Bucharest, Romania) was a victor at No. 2 singles and Krystina Bachner (Penfield, N.Y.) prevailed at the third spot to raise her season mark to 5-0.

At the fourth position, senior Ellen Anolin (Flushing, N.Y.) was a straight sets winner over Stephanie LaRock. Claudia Arteaga (Cali, Colombia) bested Megan Owen, 6-3, 6-0 in the fifth slot and teammate Merve Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the top position.

The Blackbirds began their domination in doubles action. The duo of Apostu-Efremov and Bachner remained perfect with an 8-3 victory. The No. 2 tandem of Koksal and Anolin were 8-1 victors over LaRock and Owen.

LIU steam-rolled to a 7-0 victory over St. Francis (NY) later that day. The Blackbirds failed to drop a set all afternoon. Koksal rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alicia Browne at No. 1 singles. Apostu-Efremov and Bachner throttled their respective opponents, Jaime Browne and Anna Belflore, at the second and third slots.

Anolin, Arteaga and Xenia Roman (Vera Cruz, Mexico) were all victorious in their respective singles matches en route to competing the sweep.

Apostu-Efremov and Bachner were 8-0 winners at the No. 1 doubles spot. Koksal and Anolin captured an 8-0 victory at the second spot. Andrea Pertab (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) and Jasmine Grays (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) posted the identical score - 8-0 - at the third doubles position.
