The student must take and pass an Ability-to-Benifit test if the student does not have a high school diploma or GED from within the United States or from the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands.
This requirement is effective beginning in the 2006-07 year and only pertains to those students who are receiving a NY State Award for the first time. Students who receive a NY State Award prior to the 2006-07 year do not have to take an Ability-to-Benifit test.
For the spring 2008 term, students may take and pass the ATB exam up to the last day of the term.
Beginning with the summer term of academic year 2008-09, students must take and pass the ATB exam by the last day of the add-drop period.
College graduates from the United States of recognized foreign colleges and universities are considered to meet the ATB standards and do not have to an ATB examination or provide proof of a U.S. high school diploma. New York State Education Department's criteria for foreign colleges and universities is that they be recognized by the home country's ministry of education.
The Ability-to-Benifit test is given by the Testing/ Placement Department of Long Island University and a student may make an appointment to take this test by calling (718) 488-1392 or by visiting the Testing/ Placement Office in Pratt 110. |
